FEATURED Fort Lauderdale

Have you visited the Old Dillard Museum?

Located at 1009 NW 4th St, Fort Lauderdale, a must-visit (by appointment only) for all interested in Fort Lauderdale history. This report (submitted by #FFFTL reader Ján T) was described as "One of the nicest community museums I've been to with really friendly staff. Specifically this guy name Emmanuel George, I'm not sure exactly what his role is, curator or assistant or something like that, he was generous enough to talk to me about everything there."

They've got a few rooms set up that deal with local history, images from the school and black history of Fort Lauderdale, a sports room dedicated to notable alumni, an exhibition space for local artists, then there's a classroom set up upstairs. There is also a room dedicated to West Africa heritage, and then one room dedicated to Jazz and the celebrated saxophonist Cannonball Adderly who was a music teacher there back when it was Dillard High School.

So... You Think You Know Fort Lauderdale?

You probably know... about all the restaurants on Las Olas, in Wilton Manners, At The Beach, On the Intercoastal. Fort Lauderdale is a foodie-haven.

But you might not know is... there are also a lot of hidden gems, if you know where to look. For example...

Riverside Market Cafe - (608 SW 12th Ave, Fort Lauderdale) - is a really charming place, excellent atmosphere, the perfect place to have a beer with friends. The KNS Grill (1536 NW 6th St, Fort Lauderdale) - really great Haitian food served up in this tiny little place. The Hot Dog Heaven (101 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale) - probably not an insider tip, but amazing little hot Chicago hot dog stand, this is how hot dogs should be served, takeout style with a few tables out front, great vibes inside, lovely owners. The Vicky Bakery - (4 W Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale). And don't forget the Colada Cuban Bakery (525 N Federal Hwy) which is not really an insider tip considering they've been around since the 70s and have locations around South Florida, but if you haven't visited them yet definitely a top recommendation.
